The best countries to retire to are in Latin America
If I had to do it all over, I think I would have moved south of the border.
I like me some Kafka, but translation always presents difficulties. I am thinking of that first sentence, one of the most famous first sentences in world literature. I knew the Joachim Neugroschel translation: "As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect." Now, the original goes like this: "Als Gregor Samsa eines Morgens aus unruhigen Träumen erwachte, fand er sich in seinem Bett zu einem ungeheuren Ungeziefer verwandelt." Ungeziefer is the thing Gregor has turned into, and that doesn't mean "insect" specifically, it means something more general, something verminous. So maybe David Wyllie's translation is better: "One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin." But that just doesn't seem to have the same punch, does it? Who speaks of "a vermin," after all? And nothing in English is going to match the sound of ungeheuren Ungeziefer, and it becomes clear from the next few sentences that Gregor is some kind of bug, so maybe "gigantic insect" is the best one can do. Which irritates me.
How readily can English capture the literary intention of an author writing in a language where the verbs are kept until the end, anyway? The way Kafka was writing it, Gregor is into an ungeheuren Ungeziefer transformed. Word choice is irrelevant to the totally different shape of the sentences. Maybe it even reads better in English, because it ends with the surprising part, which is what Gregor has become. There's no topping ungeheuren Ungeziefer, though. I bet that would be fun to say, if I were able to.

Saturday's Broadcast Ratings: "Cops" Marathon Tops Demos for FOX
Meanwhile, CBS is the most-watched network overall but fourth in adults 18-49.
"Saturday Night Live" Earns Its Highest Rating in Metered-Market Households Since April 6
NBC spins the numbers for Saturday, May 18.
Plan for today: May 19th, 2013
- Start a "Wild Krats" for the kids (we record all of these to the DVR; we've got fifty episodes at this point.)
- Clean Car - the big one, mine is passable but Dee's is full of equipment and detritus associated with the transporting of kids in quantity
- Swimming
- OCB - we've been pretty good about eating out of late; time for a splurge and Old Country Buffet is extremely popular with the staff.
Zagat is no Yelp-killer
When Google bought Zagat, I thought: hey, they're moving into Yelp-review territory. Combined with Google Maps, it would be a formidable offering, especially as they start combining location specific knowledge (opening hours, parking instructions, restaurant price range, etc) with physical attributes (lat/long coordinates, street address, phone number, website URL).
I started to think... "Hm... I wonder how they do with aggregation and lists?", so I picked an data-rich topic: Best Mexican Restaurants in San Diego.
15 restaurants total... 11 of which are Chipotle.
You can take a look yourself at http://www.zagat.com/lists/best-mexican-tops-san-diego-restaurants
They have a long way to go!

Because it's an experimental lit site, there's a chance this spat on HTML Giant is satire. If so, it's well played deconstruction of hilariously ill thought lit major bullshit. If not [muntz]ha ha![/muntz].
Seth Oelbaum writes strained, provocative posts mixing Rimbaud worship and freshman year radical blather like assuming Maya Angelou was all about "allowing everyone to take part in the white race system of consumption, copulation, and contentment" until he read her work and now he wants to dress her in kicky outfits. It's unclear if anything is sincere, but it's always trolling. Recently he posted a pedestrian observation decrying the coverage of the Boston bombing over events with far higher death counts, then escalated with "If you want the white race to give you tons of attention for being mass killed then you have to be Jewish." attributed to Baby Hitler to make it ironic.
Mike Meginnis responded with a post meant call out Seth, but, as can happen with trolls, in taking the bait he traps himself:(We who are white Americans may genuinely only care about the deaths of white people, though I don’t think this is the result of racism so much as a more practical concern: we’re so relieved it wasn’t us, and that it won’t be us, that we forget to empathize. I don’t offer this as a defense, but in an attempt to more precisely define the problem the Oelbaum persona is so clumsily addressing.)Being relieved when people with a skin color other than mine are killed isn't racist, it's being practical and perhaps forgetful towards others.
Yes, it's annoying to read a reactionary attention whore whose ironic anti-semitism is kidding on the square and sub-par Vice Zine bullshit. But this doesn't require defending white people. Fuck.
